Day 12 – June 12, 2025
55-day Devotional Journey – Day 12
"Sacrificing for the Gospel"
Scripture:
"Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”
Philippians 2:17–18 (ESV)
In ancient times, a drink offering was often poured over a sacrifice to enhance its fragrance as it was offered up. Paul’s meaning here is twofold: he views the faith of the Philippian believers as the sacrificial offering to God—this includes the work produced by their faith and the fruit it bears, which is offered to the Lord. Paul sees himself simply as the drink offering, poured out on top of their sacrifice to bring out its full aroma. This beautifully illustrates Paul’s humble service. He ultimately suggests that even if he were to be martyred for the sake of the Philippians and the fruit of the gospel in their lives, he would rejoice and consider it worthwhile.
To us, the idea of “dying for the Lord” might feel distant or unrealistic. But we must not forget: this priceless grace was purchased by Jesus Christ’s own life on the cross. Can I make sacrifices in my own daily life in order to honor and protect that grace?
If I examine my own life—or our community at North York (Chinese) Baptist Church—what can I offer to God as a sacrificial offering?
