"The Influence of the Gospel of the Kingdom"
Scripture:
"If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.”
Philippians 1:22–26 (ESV)
In Philippians 1:22, Paul presents three comparisons: Life vs. death, The opportunity for fruitful labor now vs. the eternal joy of being with Christ, Personal benefit vs. the benefit of others. Paul expresses a willingness to choose life because it offers him the chance to continue working for the Lord and meeting the needs of others. It is clear that Paul’s reference to choosing between life and death is related to the outcome of his imprisonment—in other words, whether he would be martyred or released to continue preaching. Of course, Paul does not fear death. In other letters, he describes a believer’s departure to be with the Lord as “far better.” The word “But” in verse 24 marks a turning point. It shows that in Paul’s ministry, he values the spiritual benefit and eternal outcome of others even more than his own life or death.
Today, we too are faced with many choices. What principles guide the decisions I make? Can Paul’s standard for making decisions also become the principle I follow when faced with choices? Paul endured suffering and regarded death lightly for the sake of others receiving the gospel. What have I given up for the salvation of others?
