55-Days Devotional Journey - Day 15
June 15, 2025 (Sunday)
Scripture:
"Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh."
Philippians 3:1–3 (ESV)
Reflection:
In New Testament times, dogs were considered disgusting animals—unclean, dangerous, and often scavenging in the streets. (No offence to dog owners today: dogs are loved companions in many modern homes!) Paul used this strong image to warn believers about those who tried to twist the gospel by adding works and rituals, like circumcision, as requirements for salvation.
Paul's warning is clear: don't place confidence in the flesh. Faithful followers of Christ are marked not by outward rituals but by a heart transformed by the Spirit, rejoicing in Christ, and trusting fully in Him.
At NYCBC, we must remain spiritually alert. False teachings exist today: ideas that subtly shift our confidence from Christ to our efforts, religious pride, or human tradition. These distractions rob us of the joy that comes from the gospel and can lead us away from the truth.
But rejoicing in Christ strengthens our faith and keeps us grounded. Our joy is not rooted in what we do for God but what Christ has done for us. Let that joy guard our church and guide our hearts as we stand firm in the truth.
Reflection Question:
How can rejoicing in Christ help you and NYCBC stay anchored in the truth and guard against false teaching?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that our salvation rests in You alone. Help NYCBC stay vigilant against teaching that adds human effort to Your gospel. Remind us that grace makes us righteous and that joy in You is our strength. Keep us worshiping by the Spirit and glorying only in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
