Day 9 – June 9, 2025
55-day Devotional Journey – Day 9
Passage:
“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, But made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name of Jesus that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV)
The attitude of Jesus Christ is not only about being humble and obedient; it is also about His willingness to glorify God the Father in His life on earth. Jesus completed redemption through his unexpected action, that is, he gave up the image of God, made Himself nothing, made in human likeness, even as the nature of a servant. He died on the cross for the world. This is the mission entrusted by God; His humbleness and obedience, the attitudes people should have when fulfilling the mission of God. Therefore, God gave Jesus Christ a name that is above every name. When this name is proclaimed, all, from the highest to the lowest, bow completely and confess with one heart and one mouth that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. But what is interesting is that Christ was already the "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" before the creation of the world and was already worthy of all praise. Why did he have to do this? Being humble and obedient is not only a response to God's will, but also teaches us how to work with others in unity to accomplish our mission. He insisted on doing this so that all glory and praise may be given to God the Father (2:11). This is exactly what the Westminster Shorter Catechism says, “Man’s Chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever." Jesus Christ completed His mission on earth and became our example.
Reflection:
Christ humbled Himself for our sake. How can we mirror Christ’s humility in our relationships with others?
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, whenever we think of you, our hearts melt: your humility, your obedience, and being close to you give us rest. But when we try to think it deeply, your humility carries with it a firm determination: because of love, you are willing to pay any price to fulfill God's will. It also reminds us that we should also be humbled and obedient to complete God's mission with one another. You are not only our Savior, but you also teach us that the most important thing in life is not to seek happiness for ourselves, but to do our best to fulfill God's will, so that our lives can glorify God. May you be honored in us. In the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen!
